Ingredients To Ditch

You will never find these ingredients in any products stocked at Flourish Beauty -

ETHANOLAMINES

Also know as - (MEA, DEA, TEA)

Found in: Soaps, shampoo, hair conditioner, hair dyes, body lotions, shaving creams, eyeliner, mascara, eye shadows, blusher, foundation, and sunscreens

Health concerns: Can accumulate in the liver and kidney causing organ toxicity. May affect the male reproductive health. May increase risk for cancer, especially with repeated and prolonged use.

 

FORMALDEHYDE

Found in: nail polish, eyelash glue, baby soap and shampoo, toothpaste, cream cleansers, skin moisturisers, shampoos and conditioners, shower gels, liquid hand soaps and hair straightening solutions.

Health concerns: Allergic skin reactions and rashes, joint Pain, allergies, depression, headaches, chronic fatigue, dizziness, chest pain, ear infections.

Reason to avoid: Although concentrations of formaldehyde in personal care products are generally low, everyday products can contain enough formaldehyde to trigger a reaction. Formaldehyde sensitivity may develop over time from repeated low-level exposures.

 

LEAD

Found in: Lipstick

Reasons to avoid: Lead is a proven neurotoxin that stays in the body and build up over time. Neurotoxins are poisonous and destructive to nerve tissue and can cause mental changes in the brain including loss of memory and learning difficulties in children. Lead is never listed in ingredients lists because its a contaminant not an ingredient.

 

PARABENS 

Also known as - (methyl, butyl, ethyl, propyl)

Found in - Every other conventional beauty product as well as baby cosmetics.

Health concerns - Interfere with hormone function and have been found in breast cancer tumours.

Reason to avoid - Parabens easily penetrate the skin and an estimated 75 to 90 per cent of conventional cosmetics contain them.

 

PHTHALATES

Found in: Colour cosmetics, fragranced lotions, body washes, hair care products and nail polish.

Health concerns: Damage to the liver and kidneys, birth defects, disrupt hormone activity, cause low androgen and testosterone levels in adult males, de-creased sperm counts, early breast development in girls and boys.

Reason to avoid: Phthalates are easily absorbed through the skin and can also be inhaled.

 

SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE (SLS) and SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE (SLES)

Also known as - SLS and SLES

Found in: car washes, garage floor cleaners, engine degreasers AND 90% of personal-care products that foam.

Health concerns: Eye damage, depression, breathing problems and skin irritation.

 

SYNTHETIC FRAGRANCE OR PARFUM

Found in: face cream, cleansers, shampoo, cosmetics, soap, baby products

Health concerns: Asthma, allergies, dermatitis, dizziness, headaches.

Reasons to avoid: ‘Frangrance’ or ‘Parfum’ is a term used by the cosmetic industry to disguise undisclosed chemicals such as phthalates and other potentially harmful chemicals. Around 200 undisclosed chemicals are thought hidden under the word ‘fragrance’ or ‘parfum’ and although ‘Fragrance’ and ‘Parfum’ appear as just one ingredient on the ingredient list it is very likely to be a toxic concoction of many different ingredients.

 

TRICLOSAN

Found in: toothpaste, hand wash, deodorant, cleaning products.

Health concerns: Contact dermatitis, skin irritation, allergic reactions, interferes with the body’s thyroid function, disturbs normal hormone function, interferes with the immune system.

Reasons to avoid: Triclosan is a synthetic antibacterial ingredient. EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) registers it as a pesticide, posing risks to human health and the environment. Triclosan has also been detected in human breast milk samples and children exposed to antibacterial compounds at an early age have an increased chance of developing allergies, asthma and eczema.
